Yoga is an ancient
science, a holistic system for controlling
all aspects of life. Hatha Yoga
is the best known and most widely
practised type of yoga in the west.
It is the yoga of asana (postures)
and pranayama (breath control).
Originating
in India thousands of years ago,
yoga aims to still the
mind. Yoga means union
and refers to mind, body and spirit.
The health benefits are particularly
relevant for modern society because
yoga is a natural stress reliever.
The body is linked with the mind,
the breath with movement, enabling
a feeling of balance, relaxation
and well-being. The physical benefits
include a well-toned supple body,
harmony of the total organism, detoxification
of impurities and reduction of the
risk of osteoporosis. Yoga is a
non-competitive practice - one works
to his/her own capacity. It is for
all ages and ability levels. With
regular practice a subtle change
takes place in the yoga practitioner
- a state of inner peace and tranquillity.
